Eat during labor!
We have known for a while that it is important for mothers to eat if hungry during labor. Labor can be a long event, and food is a critical aspect of preventing maternal exhaustion.
Now we have confirmation in a press release from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, stating that the benefits of having food during labor outweigh the risks of aspiration if anesthesia is required to perform an emergency cesarean section. The press release states:
“Improvements in anesthesia care have made pain control during labor safer, reducing risks related to eating…”
“This gives expectant mothers more choices in their birthing experience and prevents them from being calorie deficient, helping to provide energy during labor.”
